History of the department

Head of the Department Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences V.S. Kublanovsky

The department was founded on December 9, 1983, on the basis of the Laboratory of Electroplating. From 1983 to 1992, the department was called the Department of Electrocatalytic Materials, from 1993 - the Department of Aqueous Solution Electrochemistry, and from 2016 - the Department of Electrochemical Materials Science and Electrocatalysis. The name of the department reflected the urgent problems of our time.

The department is headed by Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences V.S. Kublanovsky.

The research carried out in the department under the leadership of Professor Kublanovsky made a major contribution to theoretical, applied and technical electrochemistry: the theory of electrode processes, electrochemical kinetics, electrochemistry of complex compounds, electrochemical mass transfer, chemical current sources, electrocatalysis, electrochemical devices, theoretical and engineering electroplating, electrochemical ecology and a number of other theoretical and applied areas of modern chemistry. A number of his developments were included in textbooks on electrochemistry.

The research results of the employees have been published in more than 800 articles, awarded five medals and diplomas of VDNKh of the USSR and Ukraine, and protected by about 60 copyright certificates of Ukraine and Russia. During the period of the department's existence, 10 monographs and seven thematic collections of scientific papers have been published. 18 PhD and 3 doctoral dissertations have been defended.

Main significant scientific results:

For the first time, the theory of electrochemically active complexes (EACs) was formulated and experimentally substantiated, which has now gained international recognition.

For the first time, the types of EAC formation reactions were systematized, and it was shown that the physical and chemical characteristics of metal coatings are directly related to the inhibition of EAC formation, which makes it possible to control the properties of the resulting coatings.

Based on the development of chemical, diffusion, and mitral mass transfer, a theory of the structure of the near-electrode layers was created and brought to the level of algorithms.

The conditions of a stable regime of the process of functional metal deposition and the conditions of functional metal deposition are theoretically substantiated and experimentally confirmed.

The concept of the electrochemical resistance of the system (eE/dj) is introduced and a new law is formulated: the stable oscillations of the system are minimal at a polarization current in the region of half the limiting current and do not depend on the nature of the complex ion.

The conditions of a stable regime of the process of functional metal deposition and the conditions of functional metal deposition are theoretically substantiated and experimentally confirmed.

Based on the study of the mechanism of discharge-ionization of complex ions and new electrolysis techniques, conditions have been created for obtaining any given functional galvanic coatings with metals or alloys for technical and household purposes.

The basis for the synthesis and selection of bifunctional electrocatalysts that do not contain noble metals for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen and hydrogen was created. For the first time, the "spillover effect" in electrocatalytic systems was found, on the basis of which a variant of the theory of electrocatalysis was proposed. Highly efficient stable air electrodes for chemical current sources and fuel cells were created.

Participants of the Seventh International Conference Space Technologies: Present and Future, Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences V.S. Kublanovskyi and Doctoral Student of the Department, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Y.S. Yapontseva (2019).

Doctors of Sciences, Head of the Department V.S. Kublanovskyi and O.L. Bersirova discuss the department's work plans for 2021.

The main significant applied results:

1. On the basis of theoretical approaches, many effective environmentally friendly electrolytes for the needs of electroplating and hydroelectrometallurgy have been developed and implemented. V.S. Kublanovsky and his colleagues developed the following technological processes: thick-layer cadmium plating, thick-layer galvanizing, selective copper plating of printed circuit boards, plastic chemical copper plating, gold plating, silver plating, nickel-tin plating, nickel-indium plating, cobalt-based magnetic alloys and many other functional coatings with metals and alloys.

2. Recently, a methodology has been developed for the efficient high-speed electrochemical synthesis of multifunctional (magnetic, electrocatalytic, corrosion and wear-resistant) dense films of nanostructured binary alloys M1M2 (where M1 is the metals of the iron subgroup (Ni, Co, Fe) and M2 is Mo, W? Re) from different types of complex aqueous electrolytes, with controlled composition and reproducible structure.

Currently, the department is developing the following areas: electrochemical materials science, electrochemical synthesis of materials and coatings with unique, valuable functional properties from aqueous, ionic and molten complex electrolytes, which are difficult or impossible to obtain by other methods. Theoretical and practical issues of electrocatalysis and the creation of stable electrocatalysts for energy and information conversion are being developed.
