- with pharmacophore groups - organic molecules related to living organisms: heterocycle-containing carbothioamides, hydroxyimines, derivatives of complex esters of β-keto acids, β-enamino esters, hydroxamic and bisphosphonic acids with biogenic (Fe3+, 2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, V4+, V5+) and pharmaceutically important (Ru3+, Rh3+, Pd2+, Pt2+, Ag+) d-metals;
- of macrocyclic systems based on phthalocyanine complexes related to biologically active porphyrins and three-dimensional clathrochelate cage complexes;

2. selection of the most promising compounds for use in industry and pharmaceutics

History of the department

The Department of the Chemistry of Complex Compounds was founded in 1947. In different years, the department was headed by Corresponding Members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Chemistry V.Y. Izbekov, I.A. Sheka and Doctor of Chemistry Y.A. Maletin (1987-2001). The Department was once staffed by world-renowned scientists Academician K.B. Yatsymirskyi and Doctor of Chemistry N.A. Kostromina.

The department has always focused on the chemistry of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions of simple and complex compounds, including synthesis, properties of complexes, complexation equilibria, structure of complexes, purification of synthesized compounds, spectral methods, bioinorganic chemistry, development of technologies for purification of rare elements, and recently medical chemistry.

The methods of purification of zirconium oxide and improvement of hafnium production, processes for the production of indium and metal powders of zirconium and niobium developed under the leadership of I.A. Sheka were widely used at enterprises of the Ukrainian SSR. The developments were awarded the State Prize of the USSR in Science and Technology (1986), and I.A. Sheka was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.

Zimergakl and I.A. Sheka

Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Head of the Department I.A. Shek

Fertilizers based on metal complexonantes, developed under the leadership of N.A. Kostromina have also found their application. Preparations were proposed, tested and put into production that increase seed formation and the productivity of alfalfa, as well as the yield of grapes, fruit crops and cotton. the works to create of biologically active drugs were awarded medals of VDNKh of the USSR. In 2003, N.A. Kostromina was among the first women in Kyiv to be awarded the Order of Princess Olga, III grade.

Former employees of the department are now working fruitfully at the universities of Dresden and Vienna and at pharmaceutical companies in Ukraine.

Since 2002, the department has been headed by V.I. Pekhnyo, Member of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Chemistry Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist and Technologist, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Honorary Doctor of Uzhhorod National University.

With the arrival of V.I. Pekhnyo, the scope of the department's work was significantly expanded. One of the main directions was the development of physicochemical approaches to the creation of new functional materials based on coordination compounds with predictable composition, structure and properties:
- Methods for the synthesis of hundreds of new coordination compounds have been developed, and the regularities of the relationship between the conditions of their synthesis, structure, and functional properties have been established.
- New molecular, ionic mono-, heterometallic (heteronuclear), heteroligand coordination compounds of 3d and platinum metals with polydentate functionalized derivatives of carbon chain heterocyclic aromatic organic molecules wave been modeled, experimentally obtained, and spectrally and structurally characterized.
- New complexes of platinum and a number of 3d metals with derivatives of diphosphonic acid` modified with amino, hydroxy groups, heterocyclic fragments of the structure; amino acid derivatives and with nitrogen- and sulfur-containing heterocyclic, aromatic derivatives of oximes, hydroxyimines, iminothiazoles, allyl-containing thiosemicarbazones as a potential basis for the treatment of certain cancer, virus, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, technical composites, lubricants and magnetic materials, have been synthesized and investigated.

Doctor of Chemical Sciences S.I. Orysyk.

Associate Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences O.M. Kozachkova

- Together with scientists from the R.E. Kavetskyi Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, the cytotoxic activity of solutions of Pd complexes with OEDP in vivo and in vitro against Erich's carcinoma and L1210 lymphatic leukemia was found to be equal to that of cis-platin and at the same time with significantly lower nephrotoxicity. The selective accumulation of palladium in animal bones was found, which demonstrated the targeted delivery of the cytostatic agent to the target - tumor-affected bones.
- A number of new lipophilic complexes of biometals - Zn(II), Mo(VI), Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II)- with derivatives of -keto-, hydroxamic acids modified with hydrophobic substituents have been obtained; the complexes are promising as additives to biobased lubricants.

- All developed synthesis methods can be quickly adapted to mass production if necessary.
- A method has been developed for determining the induction period of oxidation, which is the time interval between the moment when the sample reaches a given temperature (110 C) and the moment when the oxidant (O2) pressure in a sealed measuring system begins to drop sharply. The advantage of the developed method is the combination of relatively cheap mass-produced components and conventional computer software in the new measuring system, which allows obtaining test results that are superior, according to the convergence criterion, to those obtained by standardized methods - analogues. The developed method and device also favorably differ from analogues in that they allow to realize the kinetic mode of oxygen absorption by the sample both in a homogeneous solution and in a heterophase liquid system with dispersed substrate. The developed method can be used in laboratories for fat and oil production, food and pharmaceutical industries, chemical plants, and research institutions.

In 2017, a non-structural laboratory of macrocyclic compounds and hybrid structures was included in the department. The laboratory was established under the guidence of Doctor of Chemistry O.A. Varzatskyi in 2010 at the Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. Since 2018, the laboratory has been headed by Doctor of Chemistry V.Y. Chernii.

The main research area of the laboratory is solving topical problems of coordination chemistry: synthesis of macroheterocyclic complexes, in particular, phthalocyanines and clathrochelates of p-, d- and f-metals and studies by physical and chemical methods such as NMR, X-ray analysis, mass spectrometry, electron absorption spectroscopy, and stationary fluorescence spectroscopy.

The main tasks of the laboratory:
- template synthesis of macrocyclic transition metal complexes;
- exchange processes of metal ions and axial out-of-plane ligands in macrocyclic complexes;
- development of synthetic methods for the modification and functionalization of macrocyclic ligands, metal-promoted reactions of coordination compounds;
- synthesis of catalytic and redox-active metal complexes;
- studying the properties of macrocyclic metal complexes, searching for promising areas of their application, in particular, for the creation of functional nano-materials and biologically active compounds.

At present, the laboratory's efforts are focused on the preparation and study of the properties of iron (II) clathrochelates with functional terminal groups and multichromophore systems based on phthalocyanines and clathrochelates with chromophore ligands coordinated to the central metal atom, including condensed dehydroacetic acid derivatives, styrylcyanines, curcuminoids, etc. and investigation of their properties.

Today, the department and laboratory employ 3 Doctors of Science, 4 Candidates of Science, 1 junior researcher, 4 leading engineers, 2 process engineers, and 1 graduate student.
