History of the department

Head of the Department, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor V.P. Chaly
Head of Department No. 6 Solid State Chemistry, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine A. Bilous
The department was founded on February 19, 1970 under the name of the Department of Structural Research. Its first head was V.P. Chaly. The department carried out crystallographic studies of new materials synthesized both in the department and at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IZNKh NASU). The main research area of the department was the synthesis by precipitation from solutions of metal hydroxides, studying their phase, chemical composition, crystal structure, the effect of precipitation conditions and chemical composition on dispersion, aging, dissolution, and other properties of samples. The technology for manufacturing ferromagnetic materials by solution deposition was developed, which became the basis for the organization of the Advanced Manufacturing Facility, where ultra-high-frequency (UHF) ferrites of various grades were manufactured and supplied to various organizations. At that time, there were only 2 organizations in the former USSR that developed microwave ferrites: Research Institute "Domen" (Leningrad) and Pilot Production of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv), which used the technology developed in the department. Starting in 1975, the list of classes of materials studied in the department was expanded. On August 15, 1975, the name of the department was changed to the Department of Solid State Synthesis and Crystallochemistry of Inorganic Compounds.
From 11.05.1982 the department was headed by A.G. Bilous. The subject matter of the department was again significantly expanded, and from February 16, 1993, the department received its current name - the Department of Solid State Chemistry. The department continued the existing research on ferromagnetic materials and created new areas of research, in particular, high-frequency dielectrics and the development of dielectric resonators and substrates for hybrid microwave circuits based on them; ferroelectric semiconductors with a positive temperature coefficient of resistance and the development of heating elements for diesel engines based on them, which allowed them to start at low temperatures; ionic (Li, Na, Rb, Cs, O) solid electrolytes for fuel cells and solid-state batteries; nanoscale particles of ferromagnetic materials for hyperthermia inductors. Dielectric elements developed by the department were manufactured at the Pilot Plant and supplied to customers in various industries.
Today the department is one of the leading research teams in Ukraine in the field of solid state chemistry. The work of the department is widely known in the world. The team of the department has won and successfully completed 16 projects with foreign funding. Employees have repeatedly participated in international conferences with plenary, oral and invited presentations. The scientific works of the department's employees are widely cited in the international scientometric databases Web of Science and Scopus. The department first synthesized lithium-conducting materials with a perovskite structure; developed composite high quality microwave dielectrics and products based on them (dielectric resonators and substrates for hybrid microwave circuits) for modern communication systems; developed materials and thermostable heating elements for starting diesel engines at low temperature; multilayer systems in which magnetic properties change under the influence of an electric field. The company has trained 17 PhDs who are successfully working both in Ukraine and abroad, in particular, in Switzerland, Japan, Germany, the USA, Spain, and France.
